Becoming a Professional Tweeter
In the last several years, Twitter has become one of the most popular social media platforms. While other platforms, such as Facebook, have lost the interest of many, Twitter continues to grow. Twitter started out as a site for people to update their followers on their daily lives. Since the social platform's debut, Twitter has evolved into a place for users to use it as a news source. Major news events and breaking stories are being reported on Twitter. It has become the quickest way for users to get their news, as well as getting follow up details on stories. Twitter users around the world are now able to react to all types of world events. For example, the tragic attacks on Paris a couple of years ago, warranted a massive response from the Twitter community. Millions of tweets in support of Paris were sent within a few hours after the tragic event took place. Many celebrities also spoke out on Twitter to send their support and condolences to the victims of the Paris attacks. When celebrities use their social media platforms, like Twitter, to speak out about different political and/or humane issues, they are spreading their message and raising awareness with their millions of followers.
Twitter has also become a space for people to come together and work toward making change in the real world. Through Twitter, users have the chance to organize protests, and bring awareness to things that major news sources may not be covering. This has rung very true for Eygpt in the last few years. Citizens in Eygpt have taken full advantage of Twitter, using the platform as a tool to make their voices heard on several political issues plaguing their country.
In the last year or two, Twitter has become a big aid in support of the #MeToo movement. While sexual assault and harrasment is in no way a new issue, social media sites, especially Twitter, has become a place of support for survivors. It has also been the prime space to expose alleged abusers, specifically celebrities and/or those in the public eye. The public has been made aware of abusers such as, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and more recently, Michael Jackson. Activists on Twitter have reined down on each story that has been told by survivors. With every story told, and rally of support through Twitter, more and more survivors of sexual assault have gained the courage to let their truth be heard.
For the Twitter Project, I chose to follow the Buffalo News and Collider for what I am interested in. For what I disliked, I chose to follow the NRA. For my series of ten tweets on a specific topic, I wrote about The Umbrella Academy, a recently released Netflix original series. In connection to my journalism major, I followed the Buffalo News to keep up with local news stories. The news coming from the Buffalo News twitter page would more of an effect on my life since it is local. Collider also connects with my major since they are dedicated to reporting on movie and tv show news. I have always been very interesting in the behind the scenes of films and television. I enjoy discussing movie news, as well as reviewing the movies themselves. I chose to follow the NRA's twitter as something I disliked, because I am admently for gun control.
Usually, I use Twitter as a means to stay updated on important news, and have a good laugh. I retweet and like other's post almost daily, however it is rarer for me to actually type out my own tweet. This project gave the opportunity two put out tweets that were focused and concise. I have to find a way to get my message across in under 280 characters. Bloggers usually have so much to say with little to no word restrictions. Using Twitter, and its character limit, as a space to blog can not only challenge, but improve your writing skills. I also needed to find a way to make my tweets interactive for followers. It put a few tries to get the correct wording of things to make it fit the character limit. This project forces creativity to make sure you sure of your tweets are feeling fresh, and maybe even fun. It was difficult to not sounding like a broken record each time I tweeted about The Umbrella Academy. I need to establish what I was tweeting abotu each time, but need to do it in different and interesting ways.
