Making a Website

Being told at the beginning of the semester that everyone in the class would be creating their own website was pretty intimidating. Having no idea how creating a website even worked, there was an expectation that the process would be extremely overwhelming and stressful. However, the process of creating the website was actually pretty straight forward. The website would be created to specifically "sell yourself" to potential employers. The site should act as a showcase of your qualifications for getting a future job. The website gave the opportunity to show off work and pieces we have written or created. To connect our sites to social media, we were also meant to link social media we had previously created for the class. This included Blogger and Twitter. When everyone in the class was told to pick ten professional pieces of work to add to the site, I was concerned that I would not be able to find enough things for the portfolio. Looking back on pieces written so far in col

Becoming a Professional Tweeter

In the last several years, Twitter has become one of the most popular social media platforms. While other platforms, such as Facebook, have lost the interest of many, Twitter continues to grow. Twitter started out as a site for people to update their followers on their daily lives. Since the social platform's debut, Twitter has evolved into a place for users to use it as a news source. Major news events and breaking stories are being reported on Twitter. It has become the quickest way for users to get their news, as well as getting follow up details on stories. Twitter users around the world are now able to react to all types of world events. For example, the tragic attacks on Paris a couple of years ago, warranted a massive response from the Twitter community. Millions of tweets in support of Paris were sent within a few hours after the tragic event took place. Many celebrities also spoke out on Twitter to send their support and condolences to the victims of the Paris attacks. Whe

WikiHow is littered with thousands of articles created with the intention of teaching readers how to do something. These WikiHow articles can range from "How To Make Chocolate Chip Cookies," to "How To Trust Yourself." With the right amount of research and effort put into a topic, almost anyone can publish their own WikiHow article. While anyone can create a WikiHow user and start writing articles, there are certain guidelines that are enforced by pretty strict admins. After trying to create a WikiHow page for a class project, it definitely looks easier than it actually is. Before you can even think about writing a WikiHow, a topic must be chosen. While this sounds simple enough, the topic had to be something that was not already written about on WikiHow. Of course, almost everything imaginable has been written on WikiHow. This forces aspiring publishers to get creative and think outside of the box. After being sure it was not already done, the topic of choice ended

Becoming a Friendly Neighborhood Social Media User

Nowadays, it's difficult to imagine a world without social media. Encountering someone who does not have at least one social media account is extremely rare. Smartphone applications like Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. all offer people around the world the chance to make their presence online known. All of this content is very easily accessed at a person's fingertips. For many who participate in social media, the temptation to check in on these social media platforms during a work or school day is too hard to resist. Social media can easily drive someone into a dark hole of procrastination and lack of production. Why start your homework when you can aimlessly through your twitter feed for the next half hour? So what if you have an exam tomorrow morning? There are pictures on Instagram that need to be liked. The professor may be giving an important lecture, but I can't just let my Snapchat streaks die. It seems like social media has climbed a little too high up on the pri
